42 years in travel — and a business that came out of COVID twice the size it went in.
My story
I started in the UK travel industry in 1984 as a trainee in a retail travel agency, and have now worked in the industry for 42 years across Australia and the UK. In 2001 we started our own agency in Perth and expanded to three shops in major shopping centres.
Over 25 years we've overcome September 11, the Bali bombings, the GFC, tsunamis, and COVID-19 — by pivoting into other areas of travel and tourism. We started Travel Money, a retail foreign currency supplier, growing from one shop in 2003 to eight by 2018 — the largest independently owned retailer in Western Australia.
During the COVID lockdowns we created regional tourism events, including the Kalbarri Skywalk Dinner — taking over 3,000 visitors to Kalbarri in three years and injecting $4m into regional tourism. Our regional events have since expanded to Broome, Albany and Busselton, and our agency's turnover is now double pre-COVID levels.
How I help
I've helped students land positions in the industry, helped trainees sharpen their customer service and sales, and helped staff take ideas from the drawing board to a sellable product.
Why I mentor
I've always prided myself on our business using technology, and I'd love new ideas from younger people — what the next generation is interested in, and how they want to travel.
